“The Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne” – the central ceiling panel of the famous Farnese Gallery. Here is a triumphal wedding procession of Bacchus and Ariadne. Like other frescoes of the Farnese Gallery, this work is devoted to the theme of sensual love. There are two versions of the myth, dedicated to the marriage of Ariadne and Bacchus.   The following 2 pages use this file: File:Maerten van Heemskerck - The Triumphal Procession of Bacchus - Google Art ; File:Triumphal procession of Bacchus.

In , Valadier mounted a collection of ancient cameos for Pope Pius VI. These had belonged to Cardinal Gaspare Carpegna (–) before they entered the papal collection. For The Triumph of Bacchus, one of the most celebrated ancient cameos, Valadier created an extraordinarily inventive frame using other ancient cameos and engraved gems.   It shows the Triumph of Bacchus, God of Wine. Crowned with grapevine, Bacchus is depicted on the left, seated on a chariot led by a cheerful retinue of satyrs, nymphs, centaurs and putti. Among them are Pan with his pipes and probably Hercules, holding a tripod, which was a bone of contention in the Greek mythology between Hercules and Apollo.

The Triumph of Bacchus has been described as the masterpiece of Velázquez's s paintings. In the work, Bacchus is represented as a person at the center of a small celebration, but his skin is paler than that of his companions, rendering him more easily recognizable. The Triumph of Bacchus illustrates Velázquez's skill and knowledge. Its focus is on Bacchus' gift of wine and its capacity to comfort those faced with the hardships of daily life (epigraph). It’s a subtle nod to my analysis of wine’s renewed role in healthy living, but it also underscores the temptation to oversimplify the controversial topic.
