Book Description. Public participation and local community involvement have taken centre stage in heritage practice in recent decades. In contrast with this established position in wider heritage work, public engagement with conservation practice is less well developed. 6 Thornley & Waa—Increasing public engagement with historic heritage 1.

Introduction The overarching purpose of the Department of Conservation (DOC) is to ‘increase the value that New Zealanders attribute to conservation’ (DOC ).

Conservation includes both natural and historic heritage. InDOC initiated. Responding to the need for deeper understanding of the outcomes of heritage conservation, it examines the engagement of local people and communities beyond the expert and specialist domain.

This case study illustrates how to deliver public engagement, skills and training activities in conservation works in progress. It is intended for those commissioning, planning and delivering conservation projects, such as clients and project teams including architects, building surveyors, quantity surveyors and contractors.
